Dinosaurs lived long before people started writing history. They are called prehistoric animals. They lived long before there were any people on earth. So if there were no people how do we know about dinosaurs and other prehistoric animals and plants.
Sometimes when a dinosaur died, it’s body fell into mud and is covered up. The soft parts of the body rotted away. Only the bones were left. Slowly the mud around that bones hardened into the rock. Than the bones rotted away, leaving holes inside the rock.
Mud and sand trickled into the holes through cracks in the rock. The holes filled up. After a long, long time, the mud and sand inside holes became rock too – rock that was exactly the same shape as the dinosaur’s bones. These rocky skeletons and bones are called fossils. Leaves and plants became fossils too. And there are other kinds of fossils.
Dinosaurs made footprints in mud and mud turned to stone with footprints still in it. Inspects were caught in drops of sticky tree sap that turned into a glass like stones called amber. By measuring the age of the rock around a fossil, scientists can tell how old the fossil is. They do this by measuring how chemicals have changed in the rock. So fossils can tell us a lot about what animals were like, what plants were like and how long ago they lived.
